About Medroxyprogesterone (MPA) Injectable (Generic Depo-Provera®)

The Medroxyprogesterone (MPA) Injectable (Generic Depo-Provera®) is a highly effective contraceptive administered via injection. It contains progestin, a hormone naturally produced by your ovaries during your menstrual cycle. This injection must be given by your primary care provider or gynecologist, either in your upper arm or buttock, and can be injected into a muscle (intramuscularly) or just under the skin (subcutaneously).

The Medroxyprogesterone (MPA) Injectable (Generic Depo-Provera®) prevents ovulation (the release of an egg from your ovaries). It also thickens cervical mucus, making it difficult for sperm to reach and fertilize an egg, and thins the uterine lining, making it challenging for a fertilized egg to implant in the uterus.

This injectable is effective for approximately three months at a time. To maintain its effectiveness in preventing pregnancy, you need to receive one injection from your doctor four times a year, spaced about 12 to 14 weeks apart. If the injection is administered within the first seven days of your menstrual cycle, it begins working immediately. Otherwise, you will need to use an additional form of birth control for one week. Before administering the shot, your doctor will ensure you are not pregnant.

Many women who use the Medroxyprogesterone (MPA) Injectable (Generic Depo-Provera®) experience changes in their menstrual cycles, which can include:

• Spotting or bleeding between periods
• Increased or decreased menstrual flow
• Complete absence of menstrual bleeding

Approximately half of the women who use the Medroxyprogesterone (MPA) Injectable (Generic Depo-Provera®) stop having their periods after one year, and this is not harmful. Once you stop using the Medroxyprogesterone (MPA) Injectable (Generic Depo-Provera®), your menstrual cycle usually returns to normal, though it may take around 9 to 10 months to become pregnant after your last injection.

If you experience unusually heavy or continuous bleeding, contact your doctor immediately.

Important Considerations

Due to the heightened risk of osteoporosis, it’s advisable to limit the use of the Medroxyprogesterone (MPA) Injectable (Generic Depo-Provera®) o a maximum of 2 years. To support bone health, consume foods rich in vitamin D and calcium. Starting the Medroxyprogesterone (MPA) Injectable (Generic Depo-Provera®) before the age of 35 may increase the risk of developing breast cancer.

The Medroxyprogesterone (MPA) Injectable (Generic Depo-Provera®) is safe for women who are breastfeeding, but it should not be used if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or if you have any of the following conditions:

• Asthma
• Blood Clots
• Breast Cancer
• Depression
• Diabetes
• Eating Disorder
• Heart Attack
• High Blood Pressure
• HIV Infection or AIDS
• Unexplained Vaginal Bleeding

An Allergy to Any Component of Medroxyprogesterone (MPA) Injectable (Generic Depo-Provera®)

The Medroxyprogesterone (MPA) Injectable (Generic Depo-Provera®) is highly effective in preventing pregnancy when injections are received on schedule, with a success rate exceeding 99%. It is as reliable as a tubal ligation (having your “tubes tied”) and can be more effective than other birth control methods like diaphragms, condoms, and pills. However, the Medroxyprogesterone (MPA) Injectable (Generic Depo-Provera®) oes not offer protection against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). To reduce the risk of STDs, you and/or your partner should still use condoms.
